Celebrating the Life of Justine "Tinie" Juanita Johnson
Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind traditions, laughter, and the place where everyone knew to gather. Justine "Tinie" Johnson was one of those rare people.
Though petite in stature, there was nothing small about her. To many, she was Justine. To everyone who loved her, she was simply Tinie—a name that reflected her size, but never her spirit.
Everyone knew Tinie was Tinie—unapologetically herself in every way.
Tinie had a personality that was impossible to ignore. She carried herself with a bright energy that matched the bold colors she loved to wear. Whether she was dressed head-to-toe in one vibrant color, making monochromatic style her signature long before it became fashionable, or speaking her mind without hesitation, she embraced exactly who she was.
And if you knew Tinie, you knew two things:
She didn't want a whole bunch of people walking in and out of her house.
When it was time to go, it was time to go.
She loved bringing everyone together, but she had no problem letting you know when the gathering had run its course. But don't let her fool you. Tinie was also the one who would stay up into the wee hours of the morning because she didn't want to miss a single moment. She was there for the laughs, the stories, the music, and every memory being made.
Whether she was playing '90s reggae one moment or Lee Williams gospel music the next, Tinie knew exactly how to set the mood and make every moment feel special.
Tinie was the heartbeat of the family. If you needed to know what was happening, you knew exactly who to call. Chances were, she already knew before anyone else did.
Before group chats and social media updates, there was Tinie—the original family news source—making sure everyone stayed connected and knew what was going on.
If you needed to reach her, there was one number nearly everyone knew by heart: 516-377-3882.
It wasn't just a phone number—it was a lifeline.
It was the number you called when it was time to bring the family together, whether for a backyard barbecue, a driveway meet-up, a birthday, a holiday, a graduation, life's milestones, or simply to lean on one another during difficult times. Everyone knew where to go and who to call.
In recent years, Tinie found a new joy as the family's unofficial Facebook historian and content creator. She proudly shared photos, memories, celebrations, and everyday moments, making sure no accomplishment went unnoticed and no cherished memory went undocumented... no matter how many versions she may have sent to your inbox.
Through every post, she reminded us that family is not measured by distance, but by love.
Above all, Tinie treasured her family, and there was a love she reserved especially for her grandchildren. They were among her greatest blessings, her biggest reasons to smile, and the lights of her life. Whether celebrating their accomplishments, sharing their pictures, or simply spending time with them, she loved each of them wholeheartedly and without measure.
Tinie leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever live in the hearts of those she cherished. She is lovingly survived by her devoted brother, Barney Johnson; her beloved children, Aaron Johnson and Latesha Johnson; and her treasured grandchildren, Janiya Mompoint, Azariah Johnson, Synilah Johnson, Ares Johnson, Noah Johnson, and Erin Johnson.
She also leaves behind her beloved nephews, Glen "Blinky" Johnson, Maurice Johnson, and Malcolm Johnson; her cherished nieces, Atalaya "Lay-Lay" Johnson, Shakiyla Johnson, and Shauntell Johnson; along with generations of great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were touched by her love.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find comfort knowing that Tinie has made her way home, reunited with those who went before her: her beloved parents, Lillie Mae "Auntie" Johnson and Barney "Skeet" Murph; her dear sister, Annette Johnson; and her beloved granddaughter, Talani Johnson. We find peace imagining the joyful reunion as they welcomed her home with open arms.
Tinie taught us that life should be lived boldly. Wear the bright colors. Make the phone call. Take the picture. Gather the family. Laugh often. Love without limits.
Though her chair may now sit empty, her spirit will forever fill every reunion, every family gathering, every trip to Wings-N-Things, every photograph, every laugh, and every story told around the table. Her legacy will continue to echo every time someone says,
"Let's all meet at Tinie's."
Though she may no longer answer 516-377-3882 with a cheerful "HELLLOO!," open the door with an "Ahh-AHHH—what you doing here?," or flood your Facebook timeline with the countless pictures and memories she created, the love Tinie poured into her family will continue to live on. The connections she built and the traditions she started will continue to bring everyone together for generations to come.
As long as this family continues to gather, laugh, celebrate, and love one another, a part of Tinie will always be there, and her legacy will live on.
Our beloved Tinie will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
